Obstetric fistula remains one of the most severe yet least understood childbirth injuries, leaving women physically affected and socially isolated. Despite its prevalence in regions with limited access to maternal healthcare, it is often surrounded by silence, stigma, and misinformation—resulting in the lived experiences of women being underreported and deeply misunderstood. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) sought to create a film that would shine a light on this issue and bring visibility to the women living with fistula.
We developed a sensitive, story-led production approach focused on dignity, consent, and trust. Working closely with local partners and the United Nations Population Fund, we filmed on location in affected communities, prioritising safe environments for participants to share their experiences. Through intimate, guided interviews and observational storytelling, we aimed to centre women’s voices without intrusion, ensuring each story was told with authenticity and care.
